Robert Lemay Bas Relief - printed version

Bas relief

Barytone Saxophone

duration 8'00

I have always loved ancient art, especially Egyptian and Greek sculptures. The bas-reliefs are interesting because they are something between painting and sculpture; a surface in 3 dimensions. In this sense, the bas-reliefs remind me of the reliefs of the contemporary artist Eli Bornstein.

And in bas-relief, there is the word "bas" (low or bottom) which also refers, in music, to the low register. This explains the choice of the baritone saxophone for this work.

The work was written for the American saxophonist Geoffrey Deibel and was premiered in Zagreb in July 2018 at the 18th World Saxophone Congress.
