In this piece, we can speak of a true trombone and piano duet instead of a work for trombone with piano accompaniment. The two instruments become complementary to each other.

The expression means that in a race, competition or election, the two candidates are equal. In this case, it is the two performers who are equal. But also when you watch a bassoonist playing, the elbows are always a little high.
