Like a real Patchwork bringing together different pieces of fabric, this instrumental piece is composed of various musical styles that are interwoven. Thus, a fast dance in 5/4, a waltz, a “swing” passage and a “South American” fragment all rub shoulders. The composer imagined this work for the final exam of a young trombonist in a music school, so that he could demonstrate the extent of his technical and musical abilities. The sound register is limited to a high A so that the piece can be accessible to a large number of trombonists.
